“How are we going to decorate the room?” She asked in anticipation and excitement about the endless possibilities of décor for the kids’ room. Their new house was still missing many of its walls, so the room that would be for the kids was merely a framed idea, rather than a room at this point.
“Well, it depends on if the baby is a boy or girl.” He stated, more interested in getting the room to actually be able to identify itself as such. The ultrasound was set for Tuesday, February 9, 2016. She was feeling it would be a girl as was everyone else. He wasn’t convinced. “Boys run in my family. I am 100% sure it’s another boy.”
“Well I was right about baby no.1, sooooo…” was her argument.
She left work early to pick up baby no.1 (or O now that he’s reached almost 10 months) from daycare, and then pick him up from work. Once the trio was packed into the car, they headed to the hospital radiology wing.
O was seemingly excited to the point where he wanted out of the car seat for dad to hold him and play. When they were led back to the room, O looked all over familiarizing with the ceiling tiles and the linoleum floors. In the room, she hopped up on the table revealing her ever-growing tummy (it seemed bigger at 20 weeks for baby no.2 than it had with O). “Will you want to know gender?’ the technician asked.
“Yes!” He and she replied in unison, almost startling O who sat on dad’s lap looking up at the big screen TV that he and she had seen him on a little more than a year prior. About 45 minutes of measuring and pictures later, it was finally time to see just who was right. She established with O that she had no idea what she was looking at on the screen, he smirked.
“I think that’s a penis.” He said matter-of-factly. The technician smiled, confirming his assumption.
“How do you see…oh.” She noticed at that point. “Don’t even say it.” She said to him smirking right back, expecting an ‘I told you so!’
When they left, he looked inquisitively, “Are you disappointed?” They both had decided this would be their last child. One was a handful, but two was enough for sure.
“No. I mean, it would have been nice to have a daughter. Ever since I was little, I always thought if I had a daughter, I would get her all the Barbies and Barbie clothes and houses she wanted. Also, I kept my Look-Alike American Girl doll to give to her. I guess I will have no use for Amy unless O or baby no.2 have a little girl someday. I don’t know. I am happy O will have a little brother. It’ll be great.” She said with a twinge of heartache that she pushed aside, knowing she loved both her babies no matter the gender.
After that, he and she both got into baby boy mode. They went to get stuff to make gender reveal cupcakes for both their offices. At the end of it all, there were 4 dozen yellow cupcakes iced with homemade buttercream frosting that hid the blue frosting within, topped with baby blue and light pink sprinkles.
“Wouldn’t it be awesome if we got R to do a mural on one wall of the boys room to match the art pieces we bought from him?” He nodded his head in agreement, stating that she should go ahead and text him to ask. It was then that they both got on board with the excitement of having two boys. It would be hard, and surely a messy experience, but it would be one they would cherish the rest of their lives together as a family.
